Reykjavík Marathon is the biggest marathon in Iceland. For those seeking running adventure or looking for marathon tours, running in Reykjavík may be there perfect option. Before we get ready for the marathon we use our time to explora a part of the island: The Golden Circle with Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss. The south coast of Iceland surrounded by spectacular mountains, several spectacular and powerful waterfalls, black beaches and agriculture area. Skaftafell a green oasis under Vatnajökull were we will hike to the amazing Svartifoss with it dark basalt columns. From Skaftafell we run to the mountains where we have good view over the area with Skaftafell, Hvannadalshnjúkur the highest peak in Iceland, black sand beaches, glacier and glacier rivers.

Accommodation in 2-3 star hotels and visit to the Blue lagoon relaxing every muscle after the marathon.

ITINERARY

Day 1: 17th of August

Pick up at international airport or your hotel/guesthouse in Reykjavík - drive out of the city to explore straight to the south shore of Iceland, following the coastline to the magnificent waterfall of Seljalandsfoss, a unique 60 meter high waterfall that we can walk behind. We also stop at Skógafoss waterfall, 25 m / 82 ft width and one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland. We walk along Skógará river and it’s breathtaking waterfalls. From the vegetated trays of Skógará we head to more barren landscape between two glaciers, Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull. After the walk we head from Skógar to our accommodation in Vík, a lovely town famous for it’s wide black beach and Dyrhólaey peninsula. Once settled in at the hotel those who want can go out for a run around the area with your local guide.

Running: 6 - 8 miles on soft trail.

Day 2: 18th of August

Today we head a little bit further east along the south coast to reach the southern territory of the National Park of Vatnajökull, which is the biggest glacier in Europe. On our way to Skaftafell Park we stop at Fjaðrárgljúfur, a beautiful canyon with up to 100 m / 328 ft deep sheer walls covered with palagonite bedrock and vibrant green mosses and vegetation. Next stop is Skaftafell Park a green pearl at the roots of Vatnajökull. At Skaftafell mountain heath we visit the black waterfall Svartifoss with it’s dark basalt columns. This day’s run will be in the National Park, a mountain heath over Skaftafell National Park with excellent view over the stunning area of the glacier, the park, glacier rivers and black sand desert.

Running: 3 - 8 miles on mostly soft trails for those who want.

Day 3: 19th of August

Today is dedicated to the golden circle. We stop at the rift valley Þingvellir (UNESCO World Heritage Site) where the tectonic plates meet. Next stop is Geysir were the active geyser Strokkur will entertain you every 4 - 8 minutes with eruption of 15 - 40 meters high. Close by is the spectacular and powerful Gullfoss waterfall.

In the afternoon we get to the capital of Reykjavík and those who want can go to the Reykjavík Marathon Expo just opposite the hotel. Dinner on your own in Reykjavík.

Day 4: 20th of August

REYKJAVÍK MARATHON

This day is dedicated to Iceland running races as the distances available on this day are 10k, half marathon and marathon distance. We will go to the city center in the morning to the starting point of the marathon. 

After the marathon and different distances, once everyone has showered and is ready we meet up in late afternoon for a nice recovery meal.

This day is also culture day in Reykjavík so we will enjoy the afternoon and the evening around the city center, listening to outdoor concerts and enjoying the art and culture the city has to offer.

Day 5: 21st of August

Late in the morning we go to the BLUE LAGOON to relax after the Reykjavík marathon. The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal bath half an hour away from Reykjavík which is known for it’s unique composition of minerals, silica and algae. This is a perfect way to relax your body after a marathon.

After the bath we have lunch in the LAVA restaurant just by the Blue lagoon.

Those flying back to their homes this day can continue with a bus from the lagoon for 10 minutes to get to the international airport.
